Max Breskin

Principal / Co-President

Max Breskin co-founded Breskin Development in 2009 and has built on the East End ever since. Before that he spent more than a decade trading natural gas futures on the NYMEX, and he holds an MBA in finance. That background shows up less in spreadsheets than in judgement about which sites are worth taking on — the Captain John Hulbert House was one the building inspector had questioned could be saved at all. The company employs its own carpenters and runs its own shop, so the detail work never passes down a subcontracting chain. On the Hulbert House that meant cataloguing more than a hundred corbels and recreating some thirty of them from scratch. He is known for seeing problems early, which is usually the difference between a schedule that holds and one that slips.

Rob Walford

Principal / Co-President

Rob Walford joined Breskin Development in 2016. He spent twenty-five years on Wall Street, where he led one of the largest independent market-making operations on the NYMEX — more than a billion dollars in natural gas options and derivatives — and close to twenty years acquiring and transforming properties others had given up on. At Breskin he runs the build: the framing schedules, the trades, the hundred decisions a week that determine whether a house is finished when it was promised. His aim is stated plainly — on time and under budget — and he treats both as commitments rather than estimates. He is reachable, and he answers. On a build that runs about a year — and a relationship that runs well past it — that matters more than most things.

Michelle Breskin

Principal / Creative Director

Michelle Breskin co-founded Breskin Development in 2009 and has been its Creative Director since. Her starting point is that emotion, not specification, is what people are actually buying — a house is where a family’s life happens, and building one is rarely an unemotional process. She is involved from land purchase through conceptual design to final presentation, and her focus is on form, functionality and feeling. The last is the hardest to draw, and she takes as readily from art, fashion and technology as from architecture. When the Captain John Hulbert House was finished, she and her family moved in — the first people to live there in years. What she noticed was not the scale of it: “It’s the little things, like the back stairs or second-floor laundry.” She came to design from financial services and a beauty business she founded, and holds an MBA in marketing. The result is that she listens first — the brief that matters is usually the one the client hasn’t articulated yet.
